The general manager of the Madison Water Utility said the agency is considering testing the city’s drinking water for a potentially carcinogenic metal called chromium-6 after a national environmental group found the contaminant in a sample taken from the kitchen tap of a Madison home last spring. On March 30, 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rejected a citizens petition from the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) that would banned the plastic-hardening chemical bisphenol-A (BPA) from all food and drink packaging, including plastic bottles and canned food.
